There are regular gadgets, and then there are influential gadgets. The former may make our lives a bit easier or be a nice way to pass the time. However, influential gadgets could be the start of a revolutionary wave of technology.
Who says gadgets can't teach you history. If you look at it real closely, even the wheel was a gadget! So without further ado, here are some of the topmost influential gadgets to date:
- 1. The IBM Selectric Typewriter
The classic typewriter was a pain to type on, no matter how classy and vintage they look now. As far as we're concerned, they're better off in museums. This electric typewriter, however, changed to writing game forever. Not only did it make the process faster and easier, but it could also store data! Quite a wonder when we didn't have personal computers, smartphones, and laptops.
Of course, this awesome little device is quite outdated now. We don't need hard copies of our typing now that we have things like the cloud and almost unlimited storage. However, this is just the gadget that led to the personal computer being born.
- 2. Nintendo Game Boy
With our PlayStations and Xbox today, Nintendo Game Boys aren't that impressive. However, we may have these tidy handheld gadgets to thank for our gaming systems in the modern world.
In fact, one may even say that the Nintendo Gameboy showed how popular such games could be with children and adults alike. This just may be the reason why game developers put in so much effort to bring us constantly updating mobile games.
- 3. The US Robotics Sportster 56k Modem
Remember dial-up Internet? The slow and clunky kind that usurped your landline as well? Those were the good old days, but we have a much more convenient option now. However, this little modem was the answer to many a problem back in the days before Wi-Fi.
This device hence not only enabled us to connect to the Internet but made people want more. As a result, we are now enjoying complete connectivity almost everywhere we go in the modern world!
- 4. The Philips N1500 VCR
In 1972, VCRs were what people used to watch their rented movies on. The younger generation may not understand several words here. Today, watching a movie is as simple as clicking waiting. However, the VCR is the father of the DVR and basically pioneered the recording movement.
Before Philips installed the recording option, people had to chose which show to watch. There was no concept of recording. If you missed a show, you missed it and had to wait for a repeat telecast or rerun. However, this handy VCR changed all that and brought us to the future where we can watch our shows just when we please. Sure, it was expensive at the time, but the technology just gets better and cheaper. Now, even those living from paycheck to paycheck may invest in a DVR that give them a well-earned unwinding session.
- 5. The Apple iPod
Apple wasn’t really taking off in terms of its computers and gadgets around the time they launched the iPod. However, this dinky little gadget won the hearts and mind of music lovers all over the world. Sure, we had mp3 players before that, but scratchy and faulty CDS were more likely to be on our bedside tables.
However, the CD soon faced the end of a very short reign when the Apple iPod came into being. This music revolution has effectively changed the realm of music forever, with changing copyright laws and widespread access all over the world.
- Wrap-Up…
Innovative technology has been reshaping the face of the world since time immemorial. Some waves of revolutionary technology may have started in the East; some in the West. Whatever the case may be, we are very grateful for these gadgets for giving us our ultra-connected lifestyle and ease of communication. Here’s hoping we use them well!
