Jones will miss the Bengals opener, a AFC North game against the Ravens. Jones was charged with misdemeanor assault and obstructing official business. A contingency fee for harassment with a physical substance was dropped in March.
The NFL Zone released an announcement on Jones' situation:
The NFL now told Adam Jones of the Cincinnati Bengals that he is going to be suspended without pay to the first 2017 regular season match for violating the league's Personal Conduct Policy.
In May, Jones entered a plea of guilty to obstruction of official business stemming from a January 2017 event. The state court imposed a sentence of time served (two days' confinement) and court charges.
The NFL Zone explained in a letter to Jones that it considered the "extensive video documentation of the tone, tenor and character of your interactions with law enforcement in the site of the arrest, during transport to the prison, and during the reservation procedure. As you acknowledged, your words and actions reflected badly on you and your family, the Cincinnati Bengals football team, along with the NFL. While it is our understanding that proper apologies have been publicly extended, they don't completely negate your behaviour and entry of culpability for the underlying conduct."
Jones is going to be qualified to come back to the team's active roster on Monday, September 11 following the Bengals' September 10 game against the Baltimore Ravens. Jones is qualified to take part in all preseason practices and games.
It's not Jones' initial suspension. He missed part and the entire 2007 season of the 2008 season. He's been detained a total of 10 times since being drafted 12 decades ago.
Jones signed a three-year contract with the Bengals before the 2016 season. He played last season, and it seems unlikely he'll be in a position to do this again unless his appeal is successful.
However, the chances aren't in his favor.
